Hello and welcome to Auto Mania. My name is Avnish, and today I’m going to take some time to look at a news article that came out fairly recently. I think it was either this morning or yesterday. I actually just saw it this morning. Recaro Automotive, specifically, has just filed for bankruptcy.
Relevance to the Car Community
Now, usually, I don’t cover a lot of news articles like this in general for the car community, but this one is relevant to us. Many of the STIs from the past and some WRX models today come with Recaro seats. These are the same Recaros we’re talking about—Recaro Automotive, a separate entity of Recaro Holdings that deals with automotive products.
Impact on Various Car Manufacturers
A lot more companies besides Subaru use Recaro seats, including Ford, BMW, and Volkswagen. People are wondering what will happen if this company goes bankrupt. Will we still get seats? Honestly, nobody really knows.
Ownership and Financial Issues
What’s interesting about this article, and we’ll take a look here—this one is from Car and Driver—is that this company was bought by a US-based private investment firm back in 2020. We all know what happens when private investment firms acquire companies—things don’t always go as expected.
Back in 2020, Recaro Automotive announced it had sold its business to Raven Acquisitions LLC, a privately owned investment corporation based in Detroit. At the time, Recaro reported it had made approximately $150 million in revenue in 2019. The new ownership aimed to prioritize making seats with shorter and faster decision-making processes, allowing greater flexibility to better meet market requirements.
Concerns About the Future
I’ve been in the workforce for over 20 years, and anytime a company is bought out and ownership says things will be done faster, it doesn’t always mean things will be done better. I don’t know exactly what happened in this case. 2020 wasn’t that long ago—three and a half years, considering 2024 isn’t over. I don’t know if things were faster or better. Recaro seats themselves seem fine; I haven’t noticed anyone saying anything negative over the past few months or years.
Recaro’s Diverse Business
Recaro Holdings does a lot of work, which I didn’t know about until now. Recaro makes airline seats, which is interesting to me. They also make gaming chairs and baby seats. I always joked with my wife that if I got a race car, I could at least get a Recaro baby seat. Some of you might have Recaro baby seats.
Recaro Automotive and Recaro CS Safety were subsidiaries of Recaro Holdings. The portion sold was Recaro Automotive, acquired by Raven Acquisitions.
Possible Outcomes
What private equity firms often do is buy something, things don’t go as well as planned, and later they might do layoffs to offset interest payments. They might wait and then resell it for some profit or just sell it outright. There’s a possibility Recaro Holdings might repurchase Recaro Automotive.
Community Concerns
The reason this came up is a lot of people in the WRX group and my friends are talking about it, so I thought it was worthwhile to look at what’s happening. There’s no real way to know for sure.
Assurance for Car Owners
One thing is clear: they’re not going to stop making seats. I highly doubt Recaro will suddenly stop producing seats. If you’re buying a WRX with Recaro seats and worried about replacements or warranty work, don’t worry. This goes for any car—BMW, Ford, Volkswagen—with Recaro seats. Bankruptcy doesn’t mean their products will disappear.
Final Thoughts
Companies do strange things when it comes to bankruptcy to make money. If you’re worried about Recaro disappearing, don’t be.
That’s all I have for you. If you have any comments or know more about the situation, please go down to the comments below and let me know. I’m curious too. Hope you enjoyed the news, and I’ll see you in the next one.
